Training Times for Gayton Road Community Centre

Children's Classes

Class Times:

Mondays - 7:00pm to 8:00pm: Junior Beginners and Junior Cadets (Graded Juniors).

Wednesdays - 7:00pm to 8:00pm: Junior Beginners and Junior Cadets (Graded Juniors).

Lessons cost £5.50 per 1-hour lesson.

Dedicated under-16 classes are fun and geared towards your child's needs and abilities. The club is open to ages 5 and upward. Just come along with your willingness to learn, and we will do the rest. It would be helpful if the child knows their left from their right.

Students are expected to arrive 10 minutes before their lesson starts, be changed, and ready to begin on time.

Your first lesson is FREE – just come along in a white tee and jogging bottoms.

You only pay for your lessons, gradings, and your annual insurance renewal. You train when you want to train, not when it's demanded like some other clubs.

At Shuhari, we teach children and adults separately so that lessons are focused and tailored to the appropriate level.

We also direct children aged 3 to 5 to Sensei Keenan Pedley's "Tiny Tigers" classes. For further details, please phone Sensei Keenan Pedley on 07800-799219.

Adults' Classes

Mondays - 8:00pm to 9:00pm: Mature Beginners and Senior Graded Students.

Wednesdays - 8:00pm to 9:00pm: Mature Beginners and Senior Graded Students.

Lessons cost £6.50 per 1-hour lesson.

At Shuhari, we teach adults separately so that lessons are focused and tailored to the appropriate level.

Family training discounts are available and there is a 50% discount for the unemployed.

FAQs

Q1. How old does my child have to be to train at your club?
A1. We take children aged 5 and over. We consider their physical and mental development and encourage discipline, fairness, and sportsmanship through a mix of play and structured training.
Q2. Do I need to be fit before I start training?
A2. Generally, anyone in reasonable health can train. Adults over 40 should have a medical check-up before starting. Please notify the club of any health issues – all details are confidential.
Q3. What do I need to wear?
A3. For your first lesson, wear jogging bottoms and a white tee. Regular training requires a white Karate Gi (available via the club). Remove accessories and ensure nails are trimmed or covered.
Q4. How much are the lessons and how long do they last?
A4. Your first lesson is free. Junior classes cost £4.50 and senior classes £5.50 per 1-hour lesson. Discounts are available for multiple family members and for those unemployed (with proof).
Q5. Is training safe?
A5. Safety is a top priority at Shuhari Karate. While there is always some risk with physical activity, our training environment is designed to minimize injuries.
Q6. Why do I need a licence?
A6. A licence covers your insurance. The fee is £31.00 per annum for adults and £26.00 for juniors, which allows you to train, grade, and participate in club events or competitions.
Q7. What are gradings?
A7. Gradings monitor your progress. Juniors and adults follow separate syllabuses progressing through coloured belts from white to black.
Q7a. How long does it take to get a black belt in Wado Ryu Karate?
A7a. This depends on training frequency, but typically it takes 4 to 5 years of regular training to reach 1st Dan Black Belt.
Q8. How often do I need to train?
A8. While you can train as little or as often as you like, we recommend at least twice a week for consistent progress.
Q9. What is Karate?
A9. Karate means "empty hand" – it is a martial art of Okinawan origin that blends techniques from China, Okinawa, and Japan. It was introduced to Japan in the early 1900s.
Q10. What style do you practice?
A10. We practice Traditional Wado Ryu Karate. For more information, see our history page.
Q11. What are the benefits of practicing Wado Ryu?
A11. You will learn self-discipline, gain self-confidence, and improve your physical fitness, strength, stamina, and coordination.
Q12. Is Wado Ryu suitable for women?
A12. Absolutely – Wado Ryu relies on relaxation, speed, and technique rather than brute strength, making it ideal for women and children.
Q13. What if I train at another club or in another martial art?
A13. You can still train with us. We will assess your current level and, if needed, grade you accordingly with our licence and grading system.
Q14. Does the club enter Karate tournaments?
A14. Yes, we participate in kata and kumite competitions throughout the country. Participation is optional.
Q15. Do I have to enter Karate competitions?
A15. No – you decide what you want from your training. We support those who compete and those who choose not to.
Q16. Can we train as a family or large group?
A16. Yes, though note that adults and children train separately. We offer family and group discounts – please ask for details.
